Solar Panels on Catbells? Lake District nightmare in the making.
What If They Tried This on Catbells? Dent Fell Is Just the Beginning
Imagine waking up to the news that developers were planning to cover Catbells with solar panels. Outrageous, right? Unthinkable.
But just over the border of the Lake District National Park, that’s exactly what’s happening to Dent Fell — a remote, rugged, and much-loved fell in West Cumbria. Because it's outside the park boundary, it lacks the protection that fells like Catbells enjoy. And now, developers want to cover its slopes with industrial-scale solar panels.
The problem? If they succeed at Dent Fell, they’ll have a blueprint to roll out similar schemes across other unprotected fells that lie just outside the park — from Benson Knott near Kendal to Arnside Knott and beyond.
The difference between protected and unprotected land in Cumbria can be just a few metres — a line on a map. But the consequence is massive.
We must act now, not just for Dent Fell, but to defend the principle that wild fells — whether inside or just outside the National Park — deserve protection.
If you care about Catbells, you should care about Dent Fell.
