Solar Panels Above Kendal? Benson Knott Is at Risk
Will Benson Knott Be Next? Dent Fell Solar Plan Threatens Kendal's Skyline
If you’ve ever stood on Benson Knott, looked out over Kendal and felt lucky to live here — this matters to you.
Right now, a huge solar development is being proposed for Dent Fell, a wild and scenic fell just outside the Lake District National Park. Because it sits outside the boundary, it lacks the protections that shield more famous parts of the Lakes.
And here’s the danger: Benson Knott is in exactly the same position — a cherished local landmark, outside the park, and vulnerable to the same kind of industrial development.
If Dent Fell is built on, it will set a dangerous precedent. Developers will know they can target our unprotected fells — even those as visible and beloved as Benson Knott.
This isn’t anti-solar. It’s anti-wildland destruction. Renewable energy must be part of the future — but not at the expense of the landscapes we love. Rooftops, car parks, brownfield sites — those are the right places. Not the skyline above Kendal.
Dent Fell is the test case. If it goes ahead, Benson Knott could be next.
